Every coffee bean has something to say. It carries the story of the farm where it was grown, the care that went into processing it, and the craft that brought it to its final roast. But that story doesn’t speak on its own…
Each coffee has a voice. You just need to learn how to let it sing.
It needs the right brew.
Too often, we rush the process—we scoop, pour, and sip, hoping for café-quality magic at home. But great coffee isn’t just made…it’s crafted. When you brew with intention, you unlock the vibrant flavors, sweet nuances, and rich textures hiding inside every bean.
Brewing isn’t just about caffeine—it’s about understanding your coffee’s potential and choosing the method that lets it really shine.
Whether you’re just starting or already experimenting with grind settings and water temps, this guide will show you how different brew methods bring out different “notes” in your cup—and how to match each coffee with the approach that helps it sing.
Why the Brewing Process Matters
Every coffee bean carries a story—where it was grown, how it was processed, and the care taken to roast it. But that story only comes to life when you brew it thoughtfully.
The brewing method you choose determines which parts of that story shine through. Some methods highlight delicate floral and fruity notes, while others bring out deeper chocolate or caramel tones. Brewing isn’t about finding the “best” method—it’s about matching your coffee’s personality with the right approach.
How Brewing Methods Change the Flavor
Different brew methods extract coffee in unique ways, shaping the final flavor in your cup. Here’s a quick overview of three beloved techniques that showcase different sides of your coffee:
1. Pour Over – Clarity and Nuance
The Pour over Method—refers to the use of tools like the Hario V60, Kalita Wave, or Chemex. Hot water gently flows through the grounds, highlighting bright acidity and subtle aromatics. It’s ideal for single-origin coffees that have delicate fruit, floral, or tea-like notes.
We love the pour over for its control and clarity. It’s the method that turns your morning brew into a mindful ritual.
Try this Joylight-approved recipe, adapted from coffee educator Josh Williams:
V60 Pulse-Pour Recipe
Prep Time: ~2 minutes
Brew Time: ~3 minutes
Yields: 1 serving
Equipment:
- Hario V60 dripper
- Paper filter
Ingredients:
- 15 g coffee (medium-coarse grind)
- 250 g water at ~200°F (93°C)
Steps:
- Rinse your paper filter and set it in the dripper.
- Add the grounds to your V60.
- Bloom: Pour 50 g of water over the coffee, fully saturating the grounds. Let it sit to degas for about 30–40 seconds.
- Pulse pours: With the remaining 200 g of water, divide it into four equal pours (50 g each). Wait until the water nearly finishes dripping before starting the next pour.
-
Finish: The total drawdown should complete around 2:40.
Notes & Tips:
- The pulse-pour technique extends extraction while preserving clarity, even with a coarser grind.
-
Scale up or down by adjusting coffee and water proportionally—your ratio stays the same, and so does the magic.
2. AeroPress – Sweetness and Versatility
If the pour over is about elegance, the AeroPress is about sweetness and balance. Compact and forgiving, this brewer makes it easy to experiment with grind size, brew time, and pressure.
The result? A cup that’s rich and smooth, often with enhanced sweetness and body. Think of it as the middle ground between espresso intensity and pour over clarity.
AeroPress brewing shines with medium roasts or naturally processed coffees—It’s your travel companion, your weekday hero, and your gateway to experimentation.
Try a 1:15 ratio (coffee to water) with a one-minute brew time for a balanced, full-bodied cup.
3. French Press – Body and Comfort
The French press is all about depth and texture. By steeping coarsely ground coffee in hot water, you allow the oils and fine particles to stay in the cup—creating a heavier body and a comforting, velvety mouthfeel.
If you love coffees that feel cozy and rich, the French press is your method. Expect bold flavors with notes of chocolate, nuts, and spice.
Pro tips:
- After plunging, let the coffee rest for an extra minute before pouring—this helps the fines settle, making for a cleaner cup.
- Use a coarse grind (like sea salt) and start with a 1:15 ratio
Finding Your Coffee’s Sweet Spot
Every coffee you brew has a “sweet spot” the perfect intersection of grind size, brew time, and method that brings out its best character.
For instance:
- A washed Ethiopian might sing in a pour over, where acidity and florals take center stage.
- A Brazilian natural might bloom with creamy sweetness in a French press.
- A Costa Rica Honey could balance beautifully in an AeroPress smooth, sweet yet vibrant
As you explore how each coffee responds to different brew methods, you’ll quickly start to recognize which method brings out the best in the beans you have on hand. Brewing becomes less about routine and more about discovery.
